Title: Bursting Forth
This bud from a Christmas Cactus, made monumental here, is just peeking out and ready to bloom into a bright holiday flower. Sometimes they bloom closer to Thanksgiving, then again in the spring. I like the smooth shapes that the petals make before they unfurl. The dark backgrounds are a big challenge with watercolor and take many layers to achieve the rich translucent darks that make this painting so dramatic. This was the image on my holiday card last year to great acclaim. This painting makes half of a diptych if purchased with my newer painting, "Bursting Open" of the same kind of flower but in full bloom!
For the past few years I've been painting flowers up so close that they envelope the viewer in their sensuality and rich color. Enlarged, they become almost abstractions from nature without seeing the outer shape or the environment around them.
This watercolor is painted on 140# Arches Cold Press paper. It is an original painting, not a print. A Certificate of Authenticity comes with the watercolor signed by Sandy Haight. This painting is framed with a 1" white metal contemporary frame and archival mat and backing. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. (The copyright notice is for the listing file only). This is earned by being juried into a select number of local chapter and international watercolor society shows sponsored by NWWS. The initials now follow my signature on recent watercolor paintings that you can see in the Floralscapes section of this shop.
