Title: "New Door" - Mailboxes of Bainbridge Island
I started seeing the charming country mailboxes on my pandemic neighborhood walks as possibly “endangered” when DeJoy started dismantling the USPS threatening an end of an era and the symbol of our connections to the outside world. I took lots of pictures. The houses are mostly hidden here, obscured by foliage so the mailboxes are the indication that dwellings are nearby tucked in along mysterious driveways enjoying the same quiet of nature that brought us to the island.
I’ve relished the 3+ years of country living and doing large watercolor paintings in my bright studio. I decided to use some of the photos to explore acrylic painting for a challenge and a change while the art world was on a pandemic hiatus from live shows. Here are the beginnings of a journey that I want to share with you as I launch into a new way of painting, for me, that allows for more spontaneous expression and a forgiving ability to make revisions. It’s been fun!
This painting is on a 10" square stretched canvas with 5/8" deep sides. The artwork continues the image onto the sides, top and bottom of the canvas so there's no need for a frame. The canvas was pre-gessoed before painting. The painting is protected by 2 layers of clear satin protective finish which also brings out the color. The artwork is signed discreetly in the lower right corner.
