While wandering the grounds of a Hindu Temple in Kauai, I came across a garden of vividly colored succulents that stopped me in my tracks. The drama of the simple spiny leaves had heat, grace and foreboding. The swirling vortex and the extended petal brought to mind the swirl of a Flamenco dancer’s skirt frozen into this hardy plant. (Yes, even in a place of spiritual contemplation I’m thinking about the rhythms of dance and color…)
From my series of succulents, this painting titled Flamenco Whorl is now getting lots of attention as it was juried into the Northwest Watercolor Society’s Waterworks show and is featured on the promotions for the Bainbridge Island Studio Tours where I’ve been accepted for my first time as a participating artist.

Here’s the first promo postcard for the winter Studio Tour showing a range of the artwork you’ll find including my cropped painting! This Bainbridge Island event brings 55 artists and crafts people together in 8 island studios and community halls. It’s a great way to explore the beautiful island near Seattle, get in the holiday spirit and find special treasures! I’ll be at the Masonic Lodge showing original Floralscape paintings and selling framed and unframed archival prints. Custom orders for prints are always an option either at my booth or by contacting me any time. Which painting speaks to YOU? What colors stop you in your tracks?
I hope you’ll come by the first weekend in December and share the cheer with me and with my friends at different venues. Look for Paula Gill for sophisticated ceramic jewelry, and Leslie Newman, contemporary shapemaker/digital painter!
Happy autumn! Thanks for reading!
Sandy
